CRAVINGS

Instead of looking at cravings as a weakness, view them as a signal that there is an imbalance in your life that needs correcting. The body, mind, and spirit are constantly giving you feedback about how you are doing. Ask yourself, what message is trying to be revealed through this craving? Look at the food you are eating and craving, as well as the behaviors you are engaging in, as a clue.

  • Do you want to eat something crunchy? You might be anxious.
  • Do you crave something sweet? You might be eating too much salt or protein. Sugar and sweets are expansive in nature; salt and protein are contractive. Your body may be trying to correct an energetic imbalance by eating sweets.
  • Are you working like crazy? You may be avoiding admitting a truth about some circumstance in your life that needs addressing on a very fundamental level. And because over-working and ambition are socially acceptable in western culture, you may not even realize it.

How To Manage Cravings

  • Take an honest look within. Look at the areas of your life where there might be imbalance (e.g., relationship, career, physical activity, spirituality). Be curious, honest, and non-judgmental about your state of wellness in each of these areas. If it's too much for you to handle alone, get help from a professional who can guide you through a process of healing.

  • Drink more water. If you feel thirsty, that's a sign that your body is on the verge of dehydration. Being dehydrated may make you feel like you're hungry.

  • Get more sleep. When you are tired, your body's internal balance system gets thrown off and it's hard to read the signals your body is trying to send you.

  • Include more whole foods in your diet. Examine the quality of the foods you are eating. Are you eating too many processed foods? Your body may be trying to correct a nutritional deficiency. Are you eating too many expansive or contractive foods? See here for more information on the principle of yin and yang.

A great way to stop cravings when you smell
certain foods is to put a small amount of peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball and inhale the aroma. This will turn off your brain's connection to that food and the craving will disappear!
